Aftercare: The Laws of Piercings

We all know that the most important thing about getting a piercing is that you MUST follow the aftercare instructions, but we’ve all broken the rule here and there. I’m guilty of it! My piercing downfall is that I always end up falling out of routine after a night out or something and forget to clean it. Luckily, I always get back into the routine and keep my piercings looking good.

I get it, there are a lot of rules to follow. Don’t touch the piercing, don’t fiddle with it. You need to clean it twice a day with the cleaning solution provided or salt water. You can’t change the jewellery until it’s healed. You need to avoid lying on it or wearing clothes which will catch it. Each bodily location has its own healing time and some specific rules for taking care of it. It feels like such a chore!

That being said, not taking proper care of a piercing can have some very real consequences. Not following aftercare instructions can slow down the healing time meaning you end up looking after it for even longer. Even worse, if you’re fiddling and twisting the piercing you are

giving infection the opportunity to get into the piercing. Couple this with a lacklustre cleaning routine and your lovely new piercing is not so lovely anymore. A piercing infection can be minor, but they can also be quite bad. When I got my lobes pierced, I unfortunately ended up with an infection in one of them. I’m not sure what caused the infection, but my lobe ended up very red and swollen to the point where the earring began embedding into the ear. Luckily, my mum helped me keep it clean with some antiseptic and it passed with no permanent damage. It’s important to act fast if your piercing does end up infected to prevent any damage.

I don’t say these things to scare you out of getting a piercing all together, trust me! I am a big advocate for getting as many piercings as your heart desires. It’s just my job to caution everyone who is thinking of getting a piercing or has a new one of the importance of aftercare. Please always take care of your piercings! I recommend giving them a clean fairly often even after they have healed to ensure they always stay healthy and beautiful.

Orbital: The Ultimate Cool Girl Piercing

If you’ve ever looked at Zoe Kravitz, Ashley Benson or Rihanna and wanted to steal their style, the Orbital piercing may just be the thing for you. Similar to the Conch piercing, the Orbital uses a hoop which is placed between the inner and outer Conch. It’s the ultimate cool girl piercing, and I predict it will be the piercing trend of the season.

The Orbital piercing uses a closed hoop which is larger than the standard size which is used for other piercings. The hoop orbits the outer ear and passes through at the Conch. As with all piercings, the recommended materials include surgical steel, titanium and white or yellow gold. I personally think a sparkly ring looks particularly beautiful for this piercing. We also now offer charms which can be added to the hoop to add a little something extra to a standard hoop.

In terms of getting the piercing done, you’re looking at standard cartilage piercing rules; it will hit about a 6/10 on the pain scale and will take 3-9 months to heal with proper aftercare. You will need to avoid lying on the piercing while it heals so we recommend sleeping on a travel pillow as you can’t then roll onto it.

The placement of this piercing is on a pressure point which may have health benefits that interest you. L’Officiel states that the pressure point is associated with muscle relaxation which can ease chronic pain. This can include menstrual cramps and back pain, among others. While these claims cannot be backed up by scientific research, it has been suggested that a piercing on a specific pressure point may provide some relief as a placebo effect. This means that even if the piercing doesn’t work on the pressure point, a temporary relief may be provided.

Whether the piercing does work on the pressure point or not, you can’t deny that it’s worth it simply for the aesthetics. This piercing is bold and eye catching; who wouldn’t want it as their newest addition to their ears? The Daith Piercing

Looking for a new piercing but not sure which one to get? If you’re looking for a cartilage piercing to adorn with a sparkly hoop, I recommend the Daith piercing. Located at the innermost part of the ear, it is the fold of cartilage just above the ear canal. With this piercing, a hoop is best to fit the curved shape, but other circular or curved earrings can be used. I would recommend ensuring the earring is gold, silver or titanium as these are less likely to irritate the ear.

As a cartilage piercing, it is likely to hurt when getting it done. You’re looking at a 5/10 on the pain scale but it is over quickly and will most definitely be worth it. Byrdie discusses the pain as a dull pressure, slightly more painful than an earlobe piercing. Something about the Daith piercing which is interesting is that it is located on a pressure point linked to migraine relief.

Many people who have gotten a Daith piercing in the hopes of easing their migraines have reported the piercing to have eased their symptoms. Acupuncturists often recommend migraine sufferers get a Daith piercing as a more permanent remedy for the issue and have even marked the area out for the piercer. I can’t promise the piercing will work as there is little to no medical evidence to support the claims as Piercing Mania discuss; however if you are a long-time sufferer of migraines, it may be worth a shot.

Piercings are a beautiful form of self-expression and individuality. They have the power to

make you feel unique and confident, and let’s face it, they always look great! But what if I told you there’s more to piercings than just aesthetics?

Do you suffer from migraines? What about problematic period cramps,cravings, stress? Imagine being able to ease your issue with a simple piercing. Now, I imagine this probably sounds a little odd to you, but there may be a type of piercing with a health benefit which suits your needs.

According to The Chalkboard, acupuncturists are able to use the ~300 pressure points in the ear as a map to the rest of the body to treat specific imbalances. In other words, using the correct pressure point in the ear, acupuncture could alleviate symptoms of a migraine, for example.Unfortunately, the relief provided by acupuncture is temporary, this is where piercings come into play. By getting a piercing on the pressure point linked to the problem, a more permanent form of relief could be provided.

It can be difficult to determine whether the piercings can help or not as there are mixed reviews from people and a lack of research into the topic. Fresh Trends take a negative stance in the debate, claiming the effects are due to the placebo effect and therefore are temporary; however, L’Officiel has a more positive view without making any promises.
