While ears are the obvious choice for a piercing, nose piercings are definitely all the rage just now. The Septum piercing is especially popular and, according to Jewellerybox, is the worlds favourite piercing. This small but impactful piercing may be exactly what you need to make you feel like the fresh, stylish person you know you are.

For those who don’t know, the Septum is the thin wall of cartilage which separates the nostrils. Byrdie explains that Septum piercings do not penetrate the cartilage, but goes through the soft tissue just below, known as the “sweet spot”.

If you need some celeb inspo, then you should look to icons such as Willow Smith, Noah Cyrus, Bella Thorne and Hayley Williams who have all been seen rocking the Septum piercing. I unfortunately couldn’t find any male celebrities with this piercing but that is not to say that the guys cant hop on this trend too. The Septum piercing looks just as great on guys as it does on girls.

As you may have realised, the skin of the nose is quite sensitive and stimulation of it can often cause your eyes water or make you sneeze. This brings me to pain ratings and healing. The Septum piercing rates around a 7/10 on the pain scale. It is a quick, sharp feeling which subsides once the jewellery is in. As a natural reflex, your eyes will likely water but this is highly common. It is really important that you don’t get any nose piercings if you have a cold or blocked nose as constant sniffing and blowing your nose will irritate it; just wait until you’re feeling better. Your Septum piercing will take about 8 weeks to heal but it could be longer for it to be fully healed. Proper aftercare is crucial so make sure you take care of it so it heals nicely. For Septum jewellery, you can choose either a horseshoe or a hoop. When you get it done, we use titanium jewellery but once it’s healed and you are able to change it you can get gold or surgical steel jewellery. It is advised that new Nipple piercings use a titanium barbell but once the piercing is healed, you can switch to a hoop if you so desire. Recommended materials include titanium, surgical steel and white or yellow gold. Barbells are less likely to catch on clothing which is why they are used during the healing process so changing to a hoop should be done with caution.

Changing the piercing should also be carried out swiftly as the nipple is a fast healing area and the hole could close in as little as a few minutes on a newer piercing, according to Refinery29. If the piercing was done elsewhere, we charge £5 for this service. 

In terms of pain, the Nipple piercing has mixed reviews. Some say the piercing is the most painful type, but is over quickly, while others say it’s not that painful. The pain will depend on how sensitive your nipples are but on average, rates a 7/10 on the pain scale. If the piercing is taken care of properly, and you avoid clothing which will irritate it, you’re looking at 6 months healing time. Nipple piercings are not a new thing; according to Byrdie, they have been around since the 1890’s when people would wear them to enhance sexual arousal. Their popularity falls in and out of fashion but to still be this popular proves the versatility of the piercing. Well known women such as Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Bella Thorne and Rihanna can be seen showing off their nipple piercings regularly. The Helix piercing is my personal favourite. I got mine in summer 2018 and I absolutely love it. A Helix piercing sits on the upper outer ear, usually accessorised with either a hoop or cartilage stud. There are other jewellery options for a Helix, it’s part of the reason it’s my favourite. It is one of our most popular type of piercing here at Karma Jewellery and I’m sure you can see why. This is one piercing that would suit anyone. 

The Helix pressure point is said to be linked to allergy symptoms and according to L’Officiel, a piercing in this area can relieve these symptoms. Piercing the pressure point is also supposed to help with congestion and sore throats, making a cold more bearable. Unfortunately, my helix piercing has provided me no such relief as I struggle with allergies all year round and always seem to have a bad cold. This is not to say that pressure points don’t work, I could just be unlucky, but I would suggest taking information about how pressure points can help with a pinch of salt.

On the pain scale, a helix piercing averages a 5/10 which is less than other cartilage piercings but more than a lobe. The pain is that of a slight pinch followed by a throbbing feeling. The piercing usually takes 3-6 months to heal but this is depending on how well you look after it. Information about aftercare is available on our aftercare sheet.

If you are looking for some inspiration for a Helix piercing, look to the long list of celebrities on Cosmopolitan who choose to accessorise their ears with the incredibly popular and beautiful piercing. A few notable names include Bella Thorne, Cara Delevingne, Scarlett Johansson and Miley Cyrus.

I believe part of the reason Helix piercings are so popular is how customisable they are. Not only is there a large choice of possible jewellery to wear in the piercing but a choice in how many Helix piercings you can get! It’s possible to get a double or triple Helix piercing which is 2 or 3 piercings in line with each other, giving you even more choice and even more piercing.

An Eyebrow piercing is a surface piercing which sits on the Eyebrow either vertically or horizontally. It can be accessorised by either a curved barbell, also known as a banana barbell, or a hoop. Here at Karma we use the banana barbell for Eyebrow piercings which are made from either titanium or gold. 

As a surface piercing, the Eyebrow only rates a 3/10 according to Byrdie. There are not a lot of nerves in the Eyebrow, which explains the low pain rating. We advise that the piercing will take approximately 8 weeks to heal, depending on aftercare. It is important to avoid getting make up in the piercing until it is fully healed and putting off any waxing, plucking or threading of the brows is recommended. If you’re looking for some celebrity inspiration, Steel Her Style lists Keke Palmer, Keyshia Cole and Fergie as a few who choose to sport the piercing. It’s not a particularly common piercing as it has more grunge and punk vibes than other piercings. I think the Eyebrow piercing should become more mainstream as piercings in general are being destigmatised by the younger generations who use them to express individuality. 

While I would recommend always seeing a professional for any piercing, I get that we all have, or know someone who has gotten one done by a friend on a random Friday night.

This may be okay for a lobe piercing, but for an Eyebrow piercing, there’s more too it which requires someone who knows what they’re doing to eliminate any risk. An Eyebrow piercing also grows out, as explained by Infinite Body, so it doesn’t need to be permanent. This is nothing to worry about as long as you are sure to take the piercing out before it’s fully grown out. Your piercer will be able to explain this before you get it done if you have any concerns.

You can decorate your Tragus with either a cartilage stud or a hoop. Our collection of cartilage jewellery gives you the choice of surgical steel, in a variety of colours, or gold which comes in yellow, white or rose. With all these options, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Regardless of which type of jewellery you choose you know it will look fierce.

A Tragus piercing typically hurts less than the average cartilage piercing as there are less nerves in the area. It will likely rate a 4/10 on the pain scale compared to a 2/10 for a lobe piercing and 6/10 for other cartilage piercings. Healthline explains that the Tragus is a fast-healing area so the pain from the initial piercing may stop after a few minutes. The piercing will likely take 6-12 months to heal with the proper aftercare.

Interestingly, the Tragus pressure point is linked to easing symptoms of more than one issue. The Daith piercing, famous for its link to migraine reduction, and the Tragus piercing manipulate nerves which branch off from the vagus nerve which suggests piercing the Tragus may help with migraines. The pressure point has also been linked to reducing anxiety and sugar cravings. Unfortunately, there is not much research in the field of pressure points and piercings so it’s impossible to say whether a Tragus piercing will help any of these issues. My suggestion would be to get one if it’s the piercing you’re after and then note how these symptoms may change afterwards. It could be a fun experiment!
